DESCRIPTION
Clinical Significance

Most renal diseases, as well as some extrarenal diseases, are marked by the presence of proteins in the urine (proteinuria). Typically, the amount of the protein is proportional to the extent of renal injury, while its composition or occurence can reflect the site as well as the pathogenetic mechanisms of the disease.

Consequently, quantitative and qualitative analyses of urine proteins serve as an important diagnostic tool.

In tracking its origin, proteinuria can be typed in one of three ways: Renal with the differentiation of glomerular,

tubular or mixed origin; Prerenal as in the presence of monoclonal imunoglobulin and/or Bence Jones proteins; and Postrenal as in the presence of Tamm Horsfall protein.

In studying proteinuria, electrophoresis is the method of choice because it provides a broad overview of urinary proteins and enables the identification of such proteins even in the presence of hemoglobinuria and/or Tamm Horsfall protein. In addition, electrophoretic separations of urinary proteins allow the clinician to trace the protein origin to a renal problem (pyelonephritis) or to a urinary tract inflammation, such

as cystisis or lithiasis.

Usually, urine electrophoresis is performed after the sample has been concentrated a process which

consumes both money and time. In addition, the concentration procedure may result in the loss of proteins by various physicochemical processes.

The Protur™ HiSi, Protur™ Plus and Protur™ B.J. urinary electrophoresis kits are specifically formulated to allow electrophoretic separation of urine proteins without concentration.

Protur™ HiSi Urinary

Electrophoresis Kit

Similar to serum protein electrophoresis, the Protur™ HiSi kit supports the screening and identification of albumin, total protein, tubular and/or glomerular microproteins and any monoclonal component in urine samples.

Protur™ Plus Urinary

Electrophoresis Kit

The Protur™ Plus kit provides immunofixation of total proteins, IgG, IgA, microproteins, kappa and lambda in urine samples. It is an electrophoresis system comparable to serum immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE).

Protur™ B.J. Urinary

Electrophoresis Kit

Similar to the Protur™ Plus kit, yet formulated specifically for detecting Bence Jones proteins, Protur™ B.J. enables electrophoresis of two urine samples on one gel and immunofixation for the immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM), kappa and lambda for each urine.
