The benefits of microwave synthesis Microwave enhanced chemistry represents a fundamental step forward in the capabilities of the synthetic chemist. It has allowed running experiments faster and better than ever before, £and it has become today a cutting-edge technology across the pharmaceutical, biotech, polymer, fine and agrochemical industries.
There is now a growing demand for scaling up chemical reactions from grams to kilograms. To address these needs, Milestone has created from scratch a new concept of microwave instrumentation, the truly revolutionary SynthWAVE, a game changer in microwave synthesis
Milestone SynthWAVE is designed for safe, reliable and reproducible scale-up of microwave-enhanced chemical reactions.
It handles single or multiple reactions at temperature up to 300°C and pressure up to 199 bar. Synthesis methods developed in small scale can be effortless transferred to the SynthWAVE. Furthermore, the SynthWAVE offers an incredible ease of use, allowing the chemist to run large-scale batch and parallel reactions like never before. SynthWAVE Benefits
The SynthWAVE is operated via an industrial grade control terminal featuring a full-color VGA (640x480), 6.5" touch screen display. The terminal features 1 USB port (printer), 2 PS2 ports (optional mouse and keyboard), and 3 RS 232 ports (for external devices).
The terminal runs Milestone's unique EasyCONTROL software, providing simple and intuitive; but extremely flexible and powerful control over the microwave synthesis process. No need to have a PC on the bench to display and view programs. Automatic real-time monitoring and feedback-based control of multiple parameters offers unsurpassed process control. Simply recall a factory stored program or create a new one. Press 'Start', and the system automatically follows the drawn temperature profile, utilizing a sophisticated PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller.
EasyCONTROL monitors and controls the digestion process in real-time, monitoring reaction temperature at 20 times per second. A key advantage of EasyCONTROL over other, less sophisticated systems is that microwave power output varies in real time, dependent upon the temperature of the digestion. This has several important benefits that make the SynthWAVE the easiest and safest system to use:
EasyCONTROL's PID controller continuously varies delivered microwave power, allowing the programmed temperature profile to be followed precisely. Other systems have only on/off control of microwave power, which gives much less control over the digestion.
EasyCONTROL controls the reaction throughout the run, for example reducing power instantly should an exothermic reaction occur. Other systems can only switch off power, and only when a set point is reached.
The same method is used, regardless of the number of samples synthesized, since EasyCONTROL adjusts power to match the sample load. With other systems, the method has to be manually modified whenever the number of samples changes.
Superior control means uniform reaction quality irrespective of the number of samples in the run.
USB and PC card ports are provided for method and data file transfer via memory stick or PC card and Milestone's EasyDOC Windows-based software. All methods and runs are saved, and can be transferred to/from the hard drive of the PC, offering unlimited memory for storing all sample preparation data. With EasyDOC software, it is also possible to export the run data to a spreadsheet.

SRC Technology and Operation
Milestone’s unique Single Reaction Chamber (SRC) technology overcomes the limitations of current microwave synthesis instrumentation. At the heart of the SynthWAVE is a PTFE lined, 1 L stainless steel reaction chamber, which is also the microwave cavity. This allows the design of the microwave source to be perfectly matched to the cavity shape for optimum microwave distribution and fast, even heating. The chamber is pre-pressurized with gas to prevent boiling of the solution, and is equipped with mechanical and magnetic stirrers. The microwave cavity is water cooled, which greatly reduces reaction cooling time and increases productivity. Reaching up to 300°C and 199 bar, the SynthWAVE is capable of higher temperature and pressure than any other microwave system.
Like all Milestone products, the SynthWAVE has been designed with operator safety of paramount importance. A thick acrylic shield surrounds the work area, and it lowers into position automatically as the chamber is closed. A microwave run cannot be started unless the chamber clamp is in position, and the clamp cannot be released until the chamber is cool, and pressure has been released. The PID controller continuously monitors temperature and pressure, instantaneously adjusting microwave power to control even highly exothermic reactions.
The SynthWAVE features a powerful stirrer, which ensures vigorous stirring in the 1L PTFE vessel, or in all vials whenever a rack is used, thus assuring reliable and consistent results.
Racks and Vials
With the SynthWAVE, reactions can be carried out directly in the 1L PTFE vessel, or in multiple vials. Vials are available in glass (disposable), quartz or PTFE, and are fitted with PTFE caps, which are loose fitting to ensure pressure equalization. Available rack configurations include 4, 5, 15 and 22 positions.
Numbered rack trays give the operator an easy visual check of vial number. The SynthWAVE sample racks fit easily on a balance, so reagents can be weighed directly into vials already loaded into a rack. No vessel assembly or disassembly is required - and with the disposable glass vials, no cleaning step is needed, greatly increasing work efficiency.
