DESCRIPTION

Fluorescence intensity (FI) detection uses an external light source to excite molecules (fluorophores), which then emit light of a different wavelength. The emitted light is then captured and analyzed to quantitate changes in the fluorophores.  Fluorescence intensity is used widely in applications not limited to fluorescent ELISAs, protein assays, nucleic acid quantitation, reporter gene assays, cell viability, cell proliferation, and cytotoxicity.

Gemini Fluorescence Microplate Readers

Applications using fluorescence intensity (FI) detection in a microplate format have greatly expanded over the last two decades.

Molecular Devices has years of expertise in developing microplate reader technology, introducing its first microplate reader in 1986. Since then, the instruments have continued to evolve in performance, reliability, and sensitivity. Molecular Devices introduced its first fluorescence-based microplate reader in 2000 with the Geminibrand.  Patented technologies such as the dual monochromators and AutoPMT Optimization System enable higher quality results. Systems are equipped with wavelength scanning for finding the optimal excitation and emission assay settings, and are capable of reading relative fluorescence values over a greater dynamic range.

Today, the Gemini EM™ and Gemini XPS™ Fluorescence Microplate Readers are being used in biochemical and cell-based assays such as fluorescent ELISAs, protein and nucleic acid quantitation, reporter gene, cell viability and proliferation, and cytotoxicity assays.

Enables top and bottom reading of microplates over a greater range of fluorescence intensities—all without the use of filters. 

The Gemini™ EM Fluorescence Microplate Reader exemplifies flexibility for fluorescence assays. Reading 6 to 384-well microplates, the optical design of the instrument can be switched from top to bottom read modes for improved sensitivity to solutions and cell-based assays. Dual monochromators for variable wavelength selection between 250 nm and 850 nm eliminate the need for searching out the right pair of excitation and emission filters and wavelength scanning across a range of wavelengths in increments as small as 1 nm can be used to optimize assay parameters. Up to 4 wavelength pairs can be read for endpoint and kinetic measurements, and the Gemini EM Microplate Reader offers well scanning to report a fluorescent measurement from a single point in the center of a microplate well to multiple points across a tissue culture well.
