Adenovirus

Adenoviruses are common viruses that cause a variety of illnesses depending upon the location they affect in the body. Most commonly they cause respiratory illness (common cold), but may also cause fever, diarrhea, pink eye (conjunctivitis), bladder infection or rash illness.

Anyone can be infected with adenovirus, but young children, elderly adults and people who are immunosuppressed have a higher risk of getting sick and developing more severe symptoms. It is a contagious illness spread by human contact or by touching surfaces which have adenovirus on them.

Common signs and symptoms of Adenovirus infection include:

  • Colds
  • Sore throat (pharyngitis)
  • Bronchitis Pneumonia
  • Diarrhea
  • Pink eye
  • Fever

These symptoms can be similar to other respiratory infections. Most of these infections are mild and only require treatment of the symptoms. Those with more severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing require additional medical care.

Adenovirus infections can be identified using antigen detection, polymerase chain reaction assay, virus isolation, and serology. Adenovirus typing is usually done by hemagglutination - inhibition and/or neutralization with type-specific antisera or by molecular methods.

RSV

RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a viral infection that affects the lungs and breathing passages. RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of small airways in the lung) and pneumonia in children less than 1 year of age in the U.S. Depending on the severity of symptoms, infants may require hospitalization. It is recognized as a cause of respiratory illness in older adults. Otherwise healthy people recover from RSV infection in 1 to 2 weeks. It generally occurs during Fall, Winter and early Spring in the U.S. similar to the flu.

Common signs and symptoms of RSV infection include:

  • Runny nose
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever over 100° F (38° C)

RSV infection can be difficult to diagnose based on clinical symptoms alone, because the symptoms can be similar to other respiratory infections. Your healthcare provider may diagnose RSV infection by running tests on a swab or wash collected from your nose or nasal passages. There is no specific treatment for RSV infection.
